Overview for the 2017-2018 financial year

During this year we have supported people with an ever increasing complexity of needs relating to health status, poverty, insecure housing, homelessness, stigma, isolation and poor mental health.

60% of people referred to us have a high viral load, indicating that the amount of the virus contained in their blood is not being suppressed effectively.

19% of people referred to us have a low CD4 count (under 200) indicating that their immune system is weakened and they are more vulnerable to opportunistic infections.

All these factors combine to show that we are working with the most ed people living with HIV in London, for whom the barriers to living well with HIV are multiple and not possible to overcome at the time of referral.

We are operating in an extremely difficult climate for HIV charities, in which funding levels have significantly decreased and some charities have closed in different parts of the UK. It has been a challenging year for The Food Chain, as there is no decline in the need or demand for our services.  However, Trustees consider our financial performance to have been good in this context and also sustainable for the future. We are grateful for the long standing support of our many individual donors and fundraisers as well as the charitable trusts that continue to support our work. The staff team has also worked with dedication and commitment throughout the year to ensure that both the quality and level of services has been as high as possible.
