Volunteering Opportunities 2017

As spring gets underway we’ve got lots of events coming up over the next couple of months. If you’d like to get involved, you can either email Anna on volunteering@foodchain.org.uk or use the relevant online sign-up form (details and instructions are below).

Halfway to Heaven Easter Weekend Fundraiser

Friday 14th, Saturday 15th and Sunday 16th

What: Karaoke and cabaret all weekend with long-time Food Chain friends Halfway to Heaven. It’s always a fun-filled and supportive atmosphere at Halfway, so come and join us for a drink or two whilst helping us to raise some funds.
Volunteer roles: We mainly need volunteers to don Food Chain T shirts and collect donations on the Saturday between 5pm and 8pm. This is when the drag queens are performing and we sell the most raffle tickets! If you’re free in the evenings (8pm – 11pm) on the Friday, Saturday or Sunday, it would be great to be able to have a couple of bucket-shakers on the dancefloor!
How to sign up: Please email Anna on volunteering@foodchain.org.uk with your preferred times.

Admiral Duncan Easter Weekend Fundraiser

Friday 14th, Saturday 15th and Sunday 16th

What: Easter weekend at the Admiral Duncan on Old Compton Street will see their usual fun-filled mix of cabaret, comedy and dancing to the small hours! The wonderful folks at the Duncan are kindly supporting The Food Chain on Friday, Saturday and Sunday nights over the bank holiday weekend.
Volunteer roles: We need some volunteers to collect donations between 9pm and 11pm on each evening Friday - Sunday. So if you're heading to Soho over the weekend why not do so in a fetching bright green Food Chain T shirt??
How to sign up: Please email Anna on volunteering@foodchain.org.uk with your preferred times.

Oekse Spring Supper at the Food Chain Kitchen

Wednesday 26th April

What: We’re continuing our run of sit-down dining events at The Food Chain, where supporters can enjoy a dinner created by a guest caterer in the setting of The Food Chain’s kitchen. This spring we are delighted to be collaborating with Oekse, a dining experience centered around the Nordic kitchen with Asian influence. It’s great to see our kitchen hosting such a specialist, bustling and exciting event, and the guests provide plenty of conviviality!
Volunteer roles: We are in need of volunteers in two different roles: Setup volunteers (4pm to 6pm) to help us make the kitchen look fabulous, and servers (5.30 pm to 11pm) to ferry the delicious grub and wine from kitchen to table. Dinner is included – as is the leftover wine at the end of the night!
How to sign up: Please email Anna on volunteering@foodchain.org.uk with your preferred times.

Eurovision Bingo

Monday 8th May

What: The theme of this year’s Eurovision Song Contest is "Celebrate Diversity" so what better way to embrace it than with a Eurovision themed Bingo at The Food Chain? The vivacious Topsie Redfern will be our MC, and there will be plenty of delicious food and booze on offer – with a prize for best fancy dress outfit!
Volunteer roles: We need 2 volunteers to help get the kitchen decorated and ready (5pm to 7pm), and 2 Kitchen Assistants (5pm to 11pm). If you have a burning desire to do both, I won’t stop you!
How to sign up: Here’s the online signup for Bingo volunteering, just enter your name and tick the shift time(s) you’d like to sign up for.

Covent Garden May Fayre

Sunday 14th May

What: It’s almost time for our annual presence at the Covent Garden May Fayre and Puppet Festival. The fayre starts with a colourful procession at 11 am and from 12 noon there will be Punch and Judy and Puppet Shows, folk music and dancing till 5.30pm.
Volunteer roles: We need bakers, of course, but we also need some volunteers helping on the stall to sell all of our delicious wares! 10-11am is set-up time, and 17.00-17.30 is for take-down, and you can volunteer for as long or as little time as you like. It’s always a really lovely event to take part in and the atmosphere is relaxed, fun and family-friendly.
How to sign up: Click on this link to go to the sign-up sheet. Enter your name and tick the hours you’d like to be on the stall. Please can you fill this in even if you’ve already told me you’re coming, so that I know times. If you’re baking, click on “Add a comment” underneath the calendar and write down what you’ll be bringing with you. This isn’t set in stone – I’ll email all the bakers closer to the time to confirm final details and ingredient lists. We’ve also got Clerkenwell Festival bake sale coming up in August!

Summer Festivals Volunteering @ Glastonbury and Latitude

Glastonbury (21st - 25th June) and Latitude (13th - 16th July)

We are excited to announce that our festivals volunteering is back up and running! This year we have been allocated FOUR places at Glastonbury and SIX at Latitude. As a bar volunteer, you’ll be working set shifts behind the festival bar provided by the Workers Beer Company. For every hour volunteers work pouring and serving drinks, money is donated to The Food Chain. When you're not on shift, you're free to enjoy the festival, and your transport and food (2 meals and 2 drinks per day) are provided. If you would like to volunteer, please get in touch! Places will be allocated on a first come, first served basis - email volunteering@foodchain.org.uk by Friday 21st April.

London Pride

Saturday 8th July 2017

Yes, we're already thinking about this year's Pride festival! Nothing is set yet except the date, but we're keen to make this year even bigger and better than the last. Sign up here.

With this in mind, if you'd like to be part of a planning group to think about how we can accomplish this, we'd love to hear your thoughts! You wouldn't have to commit much time, just maybe a meeting or two in the run up to the event to think of the best ways in which we can really promote, represent and celebrate The Food Chain and the services we provide. If you're interested, drop Anna an email on volunteering@foodchain.org.uk.

Drivers needed!

We sometimes need drivers to help us with food collections and ad-hoc pickups. At the moment, we collect food donations on a weekly and monthly basis from supermarkets local to our kitchen, and we also occasionally receive donations from third parties (food products, wine glasses, small furniture etc) that require a car to be collected. We have a couple of lovely volunteers who currently do this for us but it would be great to have a list of people who we could ask as and when required. Pickups generally need to happen during working hours, so if you have a car and would generally be able to help out at these times, please contact Peter on kitchen@foodchain.org.uk
