Volunteering Opportunities Spring/Summer 2017

As spring gets underway we’ve got lots of events coming up over the next couple of months. If you’d like to get involved, you can either email Anna on or use the relevant online sign-up form (details and instructions are below).

Dinner with Jay Rayner for London Food Month

Thursday 22nd June

Where: The Food Chain kitchen

What: Our next sit-down dinner event will be hosted by writer, restaurant critic and Food Chain Patron, Jay Rayner. The menu has an element of mystery and surprise, with some of the dishes created from surplus food sourced from local suppliers. The event is part of the first Evening Standard London Food Month programme.

Volunteer roles: We are in need of volunteers in the kitchen, setup volunteers to help us make the kitchen look fabulous, and servers to ferry the delicious grub and wine from kitchen to table. Dinner is included – as is the leftover wine at the end of the night!

How to sign up: Please email Anna on with your preferred roles and the times you’re available between 4pm and 11pm.

A week of fundraising at the Co-op

Monday 26th June to Sunday 2nd July

Where: Co-op Food, 275 Grays Inn Rd, Kings Cross, London WC1H 8BD

What: The wonderful folks at Gray’s Inn Road Co-op have offered us the opportunity to fundraise in their store for a whole week. We’ll also be selling raffle tickets to Co-op customers, along with raising awareness of a lovely little charity on their doorstep J

Volunteer roles: We would like to have as much of a volunteer presence in the co-op over the seven days as possible, putting a friendly face to The Food Chain and encouraging shoppers to buy tickets for the raffle. If anyone can spare a couple of hours between 9am and 5pm on any of the days (Monday 26th to Sunday 2nd July inclusive), we’d very much appreciate it!

How to sign up: If you can lend a hand, email Anna on

London Pride

Clerkenwell Festival

Sunday 27th August

Where: Spa Fields, Skinner St, Clerkenwell, London EC1

WhatThe Food Chain is hosting a cake stall at the Clerkenwell Festival on the August Bank Holiday Sunday. There will be various musical acts to entertain you throughout the day, as well as a rock n roll jumble sale, antiques and vintage stalls - and a bar! The location is at Spa Fields, off Skinner Street, EC1, just behind Exmouth Market.

Volunteer rolesWe need cake bakers and stall helpers between 1.30 - 6.30pm. Join us for as long or as little as you can, and help us raise some funds and soak up the atmosphere!

How to sign up: Click on this link to go to the sign-up sheet. Enter your name and tick the hours you’d like to be on the stall. Please can you fill this in even if you’ve already told me you’re coming, so that I know times. If you’re baking, click on “Add a comment” underneath the calendar and write down what you’ll be bringing with you. This isn’t set in stone – I’ll email all the bakers closer to the time to confirm final details and ingredient lists.

Drivers needed!

We sometimes need drivers to help us with food collections and ad-hoc pickups. At the moment, we collect food donations on a weekly and monthly basis from supermarkets local to our kitchen, and we also occasionally receive donations from third parties (food products, wine glasses, small furniture etc) that require a car to be collected. We have a couple of lovely volunteers who currently do this for us but it would be great to have a list of people who we could ask as and when required. Pickups generally need to happen during working hours, so if you have a car and would generally be able to help out at these times, please contact Peter on

It's not too early to think about Christmas, right?

OK so it's quite a long way off, but at The Food Chain we are thinking ahead to our Christmas Day meal service. The thing we are most in need of is drivers. As there is no public transport on Christmas Day, we will need to pick up our guests from their homes and then drop them back after Christmas lunch. If you're able to help out, please email
