Volunteering Opportunities Autumn/Winter 2017

As always, we’ve got lots of events coming up over the next few months. If you’re an existing Food Chain volunteer and you'd like to get involved, email Anna on

Halloween Harvest Festival @ Admiral Duncan

Sunday 29th October

Where: Admiral Duncan pub, 54 Old Compton Street, London W1D 4UB

What: The lovely folks at the Admiral are helping us fundraise by combining Halloween with a traditional Harvest Festival, collecting dry food donations from their customers and providing some Halloween themed entertainment.

We need: Bucket shakers to don green T shirts and help us collect donations. It will run from 3pm until late, so if you can spare a couple of hours to help please let me know.

Halloween Bingo Night

Tuesday 31st October

Where: The Food Chain kitchen

What: Topsie Redfern will be hosing our Halloween themed Bingo Night – held at our kitchen in Kings Cross, the fun starts at 7pm. Will Topsie be a vivacious vixen or a wicked witch? Come along and find out!

We need: We need some volunteers in the kitchen to help rustle up some lovely Halloween-themed grub (4pm - 11pm), and a few hands to help get the kitchen looking ghoulishly glamorous (4pm - 6pm).

Friday Night Dinner

Friday 10th November

Where: The Food Chain kitchen

What: We’re planning a new kind of event in our kitchen – affordable dinners themed and led by volunteers. This first one is going to be led by one of our Lead Cooks, Alice, and it will be themed around a traditional Jewish Friday Night Supper. The idea is to have dinner events in our kitchen which bring together our existing volunteer and supporter base in a fun, sociable environment whilst still raising a bit of extra money for the charity.

We need: Although this is an event we hope many volunteers will want to come along to as diners, we also need a bit of help to put it on! We are in need of 5 or 6 servers and a couple of people on the bar.

World AIDS Day Red Run (5k/10k)

Sunday 26th November

Where: Victoria Park, London

What: The Red Run is an annual charity fun run to raise awareness of, and vital funds for, essential HIV services across the UK. You can choose to run or walk either 5k or 10k, and there’s lots going on around the race this year including DJs, a barbecue – and there will also be a few panels of the UK AIDS Memorial Quilt on display.

We need: Runners!! A few of the staff team are signed up too, so it would be fantastic to have a great big team of Food Chain-ers representing our part in the community. If you fancy it, you can sign up through our website.

Save the Date! World AIDS Day

Friday 1st December

One of the biggest dates in our calendar, World AIDS Day this year falls on a Friday which means we'll be heading out to Soho en masse, painting the town green! We need lots of lovely volunteers to help us fundraise around the bars and venues, selling red ribbons and spreading the word about The Food Chain and the importance of HIV Awareness. To sign up email Anna on

Christmas Concerts with the Constanza Chorus

Saturday 9th December & Monday 11th December

Saturday 9th: 7.30pm at St Marylebone Parish Church, Marylebone Road, NW1 5LT

Monday 11th: 6pm at Western Courtyard, Devonshire Square, EC2M 4YE

What: Lead by their dynamic musical director, Joanna Tomlinson, the Constanza Chorus will kindly be fundraising for The Food Chain at their Christmas Concerts. Both events will be lovely festive occasions and a chance to raise the profile of The Food Chain in the local community.

We need: A few volunteers at each event to shake those collection tins!

Christmas Food Hamper Drive

Friday 15th December 9am - 12.30pm

Where: Waitrose, The Brunswick Centre, Bloomsbury WC1N 1AF

What: The Waitrose in the Brunswick Centre (Russell Square, Bloomsbury) are kindly hosting a food drive for our Christmas Hampers. We will be asking shoppers to add an item or two from our shopping list to their baskets and then donating them once they've bought them. All of the items will then be packaged up as Christmas Hampers for our Service Users, providing them with some much-needed essential store cupboard items to get them through the festive period.

We need: Volunteers to approach shoppers in a friendly and relaxed way to see if they'd be interested in helping out. We'll then need a hand getting the items back to the kitchen, so a driver would be very much appreciated at the end! Email Anna on if you can help out.

Drivers needed!

We sometimes need drivers to help us with food collections and ad-hoc pickups. At the moment, we collect food donations on a weekly and monthly basis from supermarkets local to our kitchen, and we also occasionally receive donations from third parties (food products, wine glasses, small furniture etc) that require a car to be collected. We have a couple of lovely volunteers who currently do this for us but it would be great to have a list of people who we could ask as and when required. Pickups generally need to happen during working hours, so if you have a car and would generally be able to help out at these times, please contact Peter on

It's not too early to think about Christmas, right?

OK so it's quite a long way off, but at The Food Chain we are thinking ahead to our Christmas Day meal service. If you're an existing volunteer and would like to help out as a Kitchen Assistant or Host on Christmas Day, please speak to Anna or Peter next time you're in the kitchen.
