Welcoming the Westminster Challenge

The Food Chain's Highbury kitchen was the venue for a different sort of volunteer induction in late November 2007. Lead cook Alastair Duncan, former Chair Martin Dibben, and an entire rota of kitchen and delivery volunteers welcomed MPs, MEPs and Greater London Assembly members to Sunday Service. The event was part of the Westminster Challenge, an organisation that exists to bring elected officials together with UK charities. The Food Chain Westminster Challenge attracted an interested and interesting group of volunteers, all of whom were impressed with our ethos and hard work.

Alastair, Martin and volunteer Luis put our visitors through their paces, explaining the nutritional background to our Sunday Service, the importance of food hygiene and then putting everyone to work as kitchen assistants! Our thanks to those who joined us: Jean Lambert, MEP; John Biggs, GLA Member; Emily Thornberry, MP for Islington; Jeanette Arnold, GLA and Chair of the London Health Commission; Baroness Sarah Ludford, MEP; and Simon Hughes, MP for Southwark, North Bermondsey.
