April 2015: Spring really is here!
June has been an action-packed month, and lots of fun. The bingo fundraising evening on the 14th was the most successful we've seen so far, bringing in £1200. It was good to meet Topsie Redfern’s Mum to tell her how much we appreciate the time Topsie so generously gives us to make the bingo evenings special. Very good going, and great entertainment too! The Food Chain was also in party mood for Pride in London on the 25th. A big thank you to everyone who represented us in the parade and for all the lovely people who showed their support along the route.
NHIVNA benefit form our expertise
At the end of the month we were delighted to be invited to speak at the National HIV Nurses Association (NHIVNA) annual conference in Manchester. As the people who provide front line support to people living with HIV at times of poor health, nurses all over the country know how important food and nutrition is in supporting recovery and wellbeing. They were keen to know more about the role nutrition can play and how poor access to nutrition support can affect their patients.
Zoe gave a presentation outlining the benefits of a healthy diet that included lots of tips for nurses to apply to their daily work, and Sophie presented the findings of our recent research study showing the relationship between food insecurity and poorer health outcomes for the people we support at The Food Chain. Both presentations were excellent and well received by the audience. Everyone wanted to know more, so hopefully there will be future opportunities to share our knowledge and expertise too. Well done Zoe and Sophie, you did The Food Chain proud!
This month’s recipe from Nourish is the Red Bean and Lentil Chilli. I had a green pepper in the fridge that needed using up instead of a red one, and as this was a lunch dish for me, I substituted the rice for a tortilla wrap. All very yummy and it saw me through the afternoon without snacking!
