July 2013: Out in the Midday Sun
How does the saying go? Mad dogs and Englishmen go out in the midday sun. Well, they’re not the only ones –The Food Chain does too and with very good results.
We had 18 runners (including Tina and Charlie) in the British 10K London run on a truly hot Sunday in July and the income from that is approaching an impressive £6000. On the same day our Training & Volunteer Co-ordinator Fran was on a mission to recruit new volunteer drivers. She spent several hours in a Sainsbury’s car park in East Dulwich making a personal approach to car drivers and was rewarded with eight expressions of interest.
Our Eating Positively service users have been regular visitors to a local community garden finding out if they have green fingers and the Festival volunteer team has been busy in the beer tents at Glastonbury and Latitude – pulling pints and raising money at the same time. That’s what you call multi-tasking! And of course the Sunday meal service has been business as usual on all those long hot Sundays. Last weekend we had bucket shakers out at Spitalfields Market and it was the West 5 birthday party over in Ealing.
The Food Chain family has certainly been making the most of this summer sunshine in the great outdoors. Thank you everyone, I hope it’s been fun and that these balmy days continue for a good while yet. Every single activity is great for The Food Chain and very much appreciated.
For the recipe this month I had a fancy for some nice green veg and as I’m a fan of spinach (too many Popeye cartoons in my childhood I expect) I chose the Aubergine, Tofu and Spinach curry with broccoli accompaniment - so very satisfying on the vegetable front.
The lentils give this recipe texture and the tofu absorbs the sauce very well
Thanks to Lead cook and Trustee Vicki Morley for sourcing this one. I forgot to take the recipe home with me and had to work from memory. This meant I forgot the peas but it was still very tasty indeed.
