Time for an update

As you’ll know from previous updates, The Food Chain has been in discussion with the café based in Lumen about transferring the lease they hold with the church for the running of the café and conference bookings for the building. We were also discussing moving our services and staff team into the building.

It’s been a long process, and I'm sorry to say that we have been unable to negotiate the outcome we were hoping for to make this plan possible.

The stumbling block we faced was financial, and despite our best efforts, we were not able to reach agreement with the people currently running the café about a goodwill payment for the transfer of the lease. It turned out to be set at too high a price for us and is not justifiable in terms of fulfilling our charitable purpose, so we will not be taking this plan forward.

Although this is a disappointing outcome, we are very happy in the Acorn House kitchen and we don’t yet have a date by which we need to move out, so we will continue making the most of this fantastic asset both for our service delivery and fundraising events.

We have plenty of time to make new plans for the future, and we are already exploring some possibilities.

All the ideas we had about how our services could work in a café setting will stand us in good stead for considering other venues.

Our services are always at the heart of all we do, and continuing our work with as little disruption as possible is our guiding principle. As you all know our journey has taken The Food Chain to many different kitchens and venues over the years, so now we will just re-set our sights on finding the next one.

As 2018 marks the 30th anniversary for The Food Chain, we are planning a few different events and activities to mark the occasion. Many of you will remember that for our 25th anniversary we organised a sponsored walk of 25 miles across London. I know many of us had aches and pains after that one, but guess what, we liked it so much we’re going to do a 30th anniversary walk of 30 miles this year!

More details will follow in May, but save the 15th September 2018 if you like a hike!

The route will be along the Thames path, finishing in central London. You may walk the whole distance, or join in for the section of the route along the way. It’s going to be a good one, so get those walking boots polished and ready.
