Egg-cellent effort at our Easter Spring Picnic!
We were pleased to welcome local businesses and friends of The Food Chain to our Acorn House kitchen last Friday for a special Easter-themed pop-up picnic.
The second Food Chain picnic of the season was held to mark the mid-point of our Spring Office Picnic fundraiser (linked below) and it also provided an opportunity to celebrate Easter, albeit one week early!
Familiar, friendly faces from Out@TimeWarner and new volunteers from Legal & General were part of a Food Chain team who rustled up a selection of picnic dishes, plates of which were then sold for just £4 each. The money collected from generous donations and raffle ticket sales amounted to an excellent £478.
A busy day for our volunteers began with an early start at Acorn House. Peter, Kitchen Manager, briefed the team in advance of their duties and a productive three-hour spell of prepping and cooking followed shortly after. Volunteers were tasked with concocting 15 picnic dishes under Peter’s guidance, including a spicy roast tomato cous cous salad and Cajun turkey wraps with sweetcorn salsa.
It’s not usually like The Food Chain to overlook a healthy fruit salad or a wholesome rice pudding where desserts are concerned. However, we did make some exceptions by introducing hot cross bun and Easter-chick cupcakes to the Spring Office Picnic menu, as well as simnel cherry tart and a seriously-chocolaty Easter rocky road. Visitors from local organisations including ITN, UCL Hospital and SHP had the option to eat-in or takeaway, with many choosing to share lunch together in our kitchen and learn more about what we do. Sharing nutritious food with others is something we are particularly keen to promote and this idea is also the premise for our wider Spring Office Picnic campaign. Here, we encourage companies and communities to bring in a picnic dish to share, and donate the £4 usually spent on lunch to The Food Chain.
This Easter-themed ‘pop-up’ picnic was the second of three Spring Office Picnic events taking place at Acorn House this spring. Our final picnic of the season is on Friday 16 May and food is to be served between 12 – 2.30pm. As always, we suggest arriving promptly to grab your picnic lunch for just a £4 donation – all welcome! We will be joined by a special guest; full details will be revealed in May.
Thank you to our outstanding supporters Out@TimeWarner for donating generously to The Food Chain, helping to cover food costs for our Easter picnic. Harry was one of five Time Warner volunteers preparing food on the day:
“We had a lot of fun and I’m glad that the day also raised a decent amount of money… Peter in the kitchen was fantastic at keeping everything moving along and keeping people busy.”
