November's Volunteer Star: Caroline

‘Volunteering at The Food Chain has shown me the absolute power that good nutrition can have"

A round trip of just shy of four hours every week hasn’t deterred Caroline from giving her time to us. And we’re glad it hasn’t! Every Wednesday, Caroline travels in from Suffolk to lend her skills as a Dietetic Support Volunteer and has been doing so since January of this year. Fran, our Training and Volunteer Coordinator, explains why Caroline was nominated:

‘Caroline really takes the time to build a rapport with service users and get them engaged with food. If there are items that people aren’t sure how to prepare at home, Caroline will always suggest recipes and take the time to talk through different ideas. This means that service users can get the most out of our grocery deliveries.

'She’s really good at getting people to try new foods and vary their diets. Furthermore, with one particular service user who had short term memory problems and was very hesitant about coming to Eating Together, Caroline took it upon herself to go down and met him at his first session. She set him at ease week after week and it wasn’t for Caroline I doubt that he [the service user] would have ever come to Eating Together’

Caroline says:

"Volunteering at The Food Chain has shown me the absolute power that good nutrition can have. I have not only learned how good nutrition is applied very effectively to each individual, but I’ve also seen first-hand how Eating Together and Eating Positively bring people together to teach them not only about positive food choice, but how to incorporate them into everyday life.

"On a personal note, volunteering with such dedicated staff, helping people in need and then meeting some of these people at Eating Together has been humbling and rewarding in huge measures."

Well, we’re rewarded by having you in the office every Wednesday, Caroline!
