This June, the UK AIDS Memorial Quilt will be displayed at Tate Modern! This is a dream come true for the partnership, as we hope it means that the Quilts will reach their widest audience since their inaugural display in Hyde Park back in 1994. We’ll be taking over the iconic Turbine Hall for 5 whole days in June, from Thursday 12th to Monday 16th inclusive.
The UK AIDS Memorial Quilt is an irreplaceable piece of social history. It tells the stories of many of those lost in the early days of the HIV AIDS epidemic in the 80’s and 90’s. In total there are 48 twelve foot by twelve foot panels, each comprising up to 8 smaller panels. Each individual panel commemorates someone who died and has been lovingly made by their friends, lovers or family.
The UK AIDS Memorial Quilt Partnership of HIV charities across the UK endeavours to display the quilts as often as possible in order to raise awareness of the quilt and its importance in our history. You can watch a short film about our 2021 London display here.
The display will be held in Turbine Hall at Tate Modern. The exhibition is free and open to all, the building is fully accessible.
We hope to see you there!
